Lisa Ojea is in her first season with the Grand Canyon University Women’s Lacrosse Program. Ojea brings nine years of coaching experience at the NCAA Division I level that include stops at Rutgers, Louisville, James Madison and Virginia Tech.
While at Rutgers (2011-2013), Ojea lead a defense in 2013 that ranked 6th in goals against amongst all NCAA Division I programs. Ojea coached an All-American goalkeeper and five student-athletes selected to the All-Region team. In 2006, Ojea was a member of a staff that helped transition the University of Louisville program to the NCAA Division I level. In only the second year as a program, Louisville advanced to post-season play in the Big East Tournament. In 2006, Ojea was instrumental in helping James Madison University win the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) regular-season and tournament titles and reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament. The team boasted 2-All-Americans and the CAA conference player and defender of the year.
Lisa Ojea (formerly Lisa Staedt) was a student-athlete at James Madison. Ojea was a finalist for the Tewaaraton Trophy that recognizes the nation’s top player as a senior in 2003 and was also a 2002 Tewaaraton Trophy nominee.
A four-year starter, Ojea was a member of James Madison’s 2001 and 2003 CAA championship teams and the James Madison’s 2000 NCAA semifinalist finish. Ojea played in three (2000, 2001, 2003) NCAA Tournaments.
Ojea was a three-time All-America (2001, 2002 and 2003) at James Madison University. Ojea was also selected as a three-time (2001-03) All-South honoree, first team All-Colonial Athletic Association selection and all-state (Virginia Sports Information Directors) choice. Ojea was voted the 2002 and 2003 CAA Player of the Year and 2003 CAA Tournament most valuable player. Ojea was named to the conference all-tournament team in 2001, 2002 and 2003. Ojea was named to the CAA Silver Anniversary team. Most recently, Ojea was inducted into the JMU Hall of Fame in 2014 and the US Lacrosse Virginia Chapter in 2015.
Ojea was also a member of the U.S. Developmental Team from 2001-03 and the Elite Squad in 2006-07.
Ojea graduated with her Master’s degree in Health and Physical Education in 2006 from Virginia Tech and earned her bachelor’s degree in Sports Management from James Madison in 2003.

Trey Whistle is in his second season as Head Women’s Lacrosse Coach.
Whistle is no stranger to the GCU campus. This will be his 7th year involved with lacrosse. He has three years NCAA experience, and was a MCLA All-American in 2012 for the 5th ranked Lopes. In 2012 he served as an assistant coach for the Men’s Team, who finished 12th in the Nike MCLA National poll. Last year Whistle was named the first Head Coach of the Grand Canyon University Women’s Lacrosse Team. The Lady Lopes competed as a provisional member in the Western Woman’s Lacrosse League. This year they will be applying for full membership.
The WWLL is one of 10 Conferences in the Woman’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association which has over 160 teams competing in 3 divisions across the country.
